“Have not I commanded thee?  Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest” (Joshua 1:9).

Having cancer is more than a physical struggle.  Cancer is a mind battle.  As we journey through life, we never know which way the road will lead us.  Even though we do not know what is ahead, we know God instructs us to “be strong.”

Courage is not the absence of fear, but a trust in God to overcome our fear.  When Peter focused on Jesus, he walked on water.   When he focused on the storm, he began to sink.  The enemy tries to turn our focus away from Jesus, but when we keep our focus on Jesus, we will make it through wherever our life’s journey takes us.

Courage got Peter out of the boat.  Trust held him up.  Fear caused him to sink.  We need to focus on the Savior to get us through our storms.

There are three lessons we can learn about courage.  First, rely on God’s faithfulness even when we can’t see or feel him.  We need to remind ourselves of his word that he will never leave us.  Second, obey the will of the Lord.  We should not fight the direction that God is leading us.  Third, live with courage and strength.  Our natural reaction is to be afraid.  The spiritual reaction is to have faith.  Remember God’s eternal promise, “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee” Hebrews 13:5.

Next month the Oasis of Hope Christian Cancer Support Group Meeting will meet on the third Tuesday, June 21, 2016, at 7:00 P.M. at Bethany Assembly of God.  We welcome you to join us for more words of encouragement and prayer if you or your loved one is facing the cancer journey.
