2014 June Message from Oasis of Hope CCSG

Many times the Bible compares the people of God to sheep.  Following are some of the characteristics that we have in common with sheep: we are followers and look to strong leaders; we are eager to eat when we’re healthy; we have sharp senses that can help protect us; and we can suffer from stress from things that frighten us.

To help us cope with the stress during a cancer journey, we need to put our trust in Jesus, the Good Shepherd.  “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones” (Proverbs 3:5-8).

We were shown a beautiful framed illustration of Jesus and the Lamb by Katherine Brown and encouraged to look deeply in the face of the lamb to describe how the lamb was feeling. Descriptive words such as contented, peaceful, restful, quiet, and still are a few of the descriptions.  How can we be like the lamb resting in the arms of our Savior even during the cancer journey?  Following are three ways by remembering the ART:

1.   Abide. (stay, continue, remain) How? Read and meditate on His word. “Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, ‘If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed’” (John 8:31).

2.   Rest. (free of anxieties) How? Don’t worry about your problems. Pray about them. “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.  I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” (John 14:27).  “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7).

3.   Trust.  (believe, hope, depend) How? Have faith that God will take of you.  “And those who know Your name will put their trust in You; For You, Lord, have not forsaken those who seek You” (Psalm 9:10).

If you are walking the cancer journey, we invite you to join us for our monthly meetings. Our next meeting is July 15, at 7:00 P.M.  We welcome you to join us as we share our stories and bring more words of encouragement.
