Words of Hope from the Well

"Heaviness in the heart of man maketh it stoop: but a good word maketh it glad."

1 Thessalonians 5:18 " In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you."

2 Corinthians 12:9 "And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness."

This cancer journey is yours and what matters is your walk through it.  We didn't choose this battle, but we can look for God's hand in this battle and trust that He will use it for His glory!  The Lord wants an intimate walk with us which often comes through trials and brokenness.  If we let him God will intimately walk with us during our deepest trials.  In our intimate walk we will find inner strength if we strive to focus on His will for our lives instead of merely seeing the long rocky path stretched before our eyes.

Eventually, all of us will find ourselves in situations that are irrevocable and unchangeable- circumstances that cannot be undone- only counteracted.  We are forced to figure out how to take a worst case scenario and turn it into the best case scenario we can.  Sometimes the only thing we can do in our suffering is to allow God to turn the bitterness in our lives into something sweet. "When life gives you lemons - make lemonade."  Don't just focus on what is wrong in our life; focus on what God will do in your life.  God I might have cancer and I might be sick today - Thank you for giving me great friends and family.  Thank you for giving me another sunrise.

Next month Oasis of Hope Christian Cancer Support Group Meeting will be on the third Tuesday December 19, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. at Bethany Assembly of God.  We welcome you to join us for words of encouragement and prayer if you or your loved one is facing the cancer journey.

2 Cor. 10:4-5 "For the weapons of our warfare are not of flesh, but mighty before God to the casting down of strongholds, casting down imaginations, and every high thing that is exalted against the knowledge of God, and bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ."

Philippians 4:8 "Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honorable, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things."

When cancer strikes, the battle for survival must be engaged at the mental, emotional and spiritual levels as much as at the physical level.  Thoughts of death, dying, resignation, despair, depression and hopelessness are as lethal as cancer itself.  The Lord knows that Satan will come against us with different thoughts and the Lord gives us supernatural weapons to win the battle for our minds and thoughts, including His power, His Word and His authority, when we've given our lives to Him.  Preparing for life's trials and tribulations means filling our heart, soul, and Mind with God's Word.  When your mind start to fret about the future remind yourself what God has provided for you today and take pleasure and gratitude for those things.  Remind yourself that you have no control over the future, and can do nothing about the past, so strive to live your life in light of "this day" that God has provided.  God's path requires us to take one day at a time, one treatment at a time, one stage at a time, one moment at a time.

Next month Oasis of Hope Christian Cancer Support Group Meeting will be on the third Tuesday November 21, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. at Bethany Assembly of God.  No October meeting.  We welcome you to join us for words of encouragement and prayer if you or your loved one is facing the cancer journey.

Lamentations 3: 22-23: "Through the Lord's mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not.  They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness."

Jeremiah had been writing about how difficult and depressing his circumstances were in captivity.  But then suddenly, in the middle of all this, his thoughts take a positive turn toward the character of God.  Mercies is used 250 times in the  Old Testament.  An all-inclusive term for God's love, goodness, forgiveness, compassion, and faithfulness.  When Jeremiah meditated on this, he remembered That God had many mercies available every single day.  When he struggled with discouragement he focused on yet another characteristic - Faithfulness.  When we become discouraged we should do what Jeremiah did, stop and remember God's faithfulness.  When the storms of cancer overwhelm us, we need to get alone and reflect on this amazing truth: God is faithful!  He is faithful and full of mercy.  Remember where He has already brought you from and He continues to walk with us.  In the midst of your battle remember to put your faith in God!

May 2017 Meeting From Oasis of Hope CCSG

"The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. "The Lord is my portion," says my soul, "therefore I will hope in him."  Lamentations 3:22-24
"Be still, and know that I am God...God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.  Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way...The Lord of hosts is with us."(Excerpts from Psalm46)  Philippians 4:13 "I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me."

In a storm (like cancer) you have to go with what you know not what you feel.  Feelings can be deceiving.  We want so much to walk by sight and not by faith!  But we need to walk by faith and remember He will carry us through the hard times when they come. We may know all this and believe all of this in our heads, but some days this truth does not rest so easily in our hearts. Sometimes, our hearts may resists fully embracing this truth and the peace that is would bring.  Some moments, we can become overwhelmed with anxiety about our cancer journey that we don't even know how to pray.  Then I would say be reminded of the scriptures above.  Scripture can be a great way to get through the times of anxiety.  We need to let faith arise in our souls to remind ourselves that there is a healer, that His love is deeper than the sea, that His mercy is unfailing and His arms are a fortress for the weak.  We can walk through this cancer journey because we can do all things through Christ which strengthens us!

April 2017 Meeting from Oasis of Hope CCSG

Matthew 6:34 - "Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.  Each day has enough trouble of it's own."

We as cancer patients have a tendency to look back before we had cancer and long for those days.  The way things use to be before we were diagnosed with cancer or we allow our thoughts to dwell on the fears of what tomorrow might bring.  We can ruin the memories of today by allowing our thoughts to dwell on the past or the fears of what tomorrow might bring.  The true treasures of our lives are found in our daily relationships and opportunities.  We don't know what the future will bring, but we have today and that is reason enough to celebrate!  We must look for the blessing of the day.  From care givers to friends who stop by to cards in the mail.  These are treasures and blessings.  Life is to be lived one day at a time.  Jesus will provide what we need for that day.  Prayer - Jesus help me not to dwell on the past or entertain thought of the future, but to "stay right here" and to embrace today.

Psalm 18:6 "In my distress I called to the Lord; I cried to my God for help.  From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came before him, into his ears."

When we cry to the Lord he does hear us and He ministers to us.  One of the ways He ministers to us by bringing back to our remembrance the scripture. When we build our life on the Word, we are building on a firm foundation that can survive the hurricane-force winds of a trial and seemingly impossible seasons of difficulty.  Life with cancer is a constant ebb and flow of victories and defeats.  Scripture and song will encourage you in your journey.  Psalm 119:105 "A lamp to our feet and a light to our path."  The Word can change the way we think and live.  Spend ample time absorbing His Word.  Letting it speak into our hearts.  Have a heart to heart meeting with the Lord.

2 Chronicles 20:9  "If Calamity comes... [we] will cry out to you in our distress, and you will hear us".

Choosing Faith Instead of Fear
Having cancer is what some call "being in the valley" where dread overshadows everything else. Worry, Fear and Anxiety are three words we all could do without!  When cancer enters our lives, these feelings can overwhelm us and take us to the depths of despair.  Corrie Ten Boom said it well when she explained, "Worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow, it empties today of its strength".  For the days when you are struggling with worry, fear and anxiety look to the promises of God in His Word!  Proverbs 3:5-6, John 16:33, John 14:27, 1Peter 5:7, Psalms 46:1-2.  Choose faith over fear everyday when you open your eyes.  Surrender your fears to God.  The more you fill your heart and mind with God's Word, the stronger your faith will be.

December 2016 Meeting

"If you give, you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full measure, pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, and running over.  Whatever measure you use in giving--large or small--t-it will be used to measure what is given back to you."  Luke 6:38, NLT

This is the giving season.  This verse is more than financial giving and sometimes we don't have a lot of finances because of the extra burden cancer can have on our finances.  So here are a few ideas we have do for others this season.  A gift of time. Time is a valuable gift.  Spending time with others is a precious gift of our life.  A gift of prayer.  A commitment to pray for someone consistently.  Only heaven knows all that God can accomplish through our prayers!  A gift of encouragement.  A written note or letter requires time, careful thought and allows that person to read your words of encouragement again and again.

Psalm 105:1-4   "O give thanks unto the Lord; call upon his name: make known his deeds among the people.  Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him: talk ye of all his wondrous works.  Glory ye in his holy name: let the heart of them rejoice that seek the Lord.  Seek the Lord, and his strength: see his face evermore."

Being thankful through your cancer journey.  Look for the small victories- any kind of positive test results are victories.  A good day, successful surgery, clean scans be thankful for the hope they provide.  Moments shared with loved ones, support systems, Insurance.  All these things we can be thankful for.  The fact that Jesus never leaves us or forsakes us but walks on this journey with us.  We can be thankful for our relationship with him and sing praises to him.

October 2016 Meeting from Oasis of Hope CCSG

"My heart has heard you say, Come and talk with me  And my heart responds "Lord I am coming." (Psalm 27:8 NLT).

Whatever you need to tell the Lord today, just say it -- from the heart.  God wants to hear your heart.  He wants us to talk with Him about our cancer journey.  He wants to know our thoughts and concerns.  He wants us to talk with Him and then listen for His answers.  Our minds have so much in them that we might not hear Him.  But wait for Him.

"Morning by morning he wakens me and opens my understanding to his will.  The Sovereign Lord has spoken to me, and I have listened..." Isaiah 50:4b, 5a (NLT).

Once you hear from God, accept His words for you, surrender your will to Him including your cancer journey.  Remember not everything is as it seems.  In 1Kings 19:9-13 Elijah told the Lord he was the only prophet left and told the Lord from his heart how he felt.  But the Lord answered him in a still small voice and let him know there were 7000 prophets still.  The Lord knows are whole journey and at times it is not what we think.  We must learn to surrender our will and trust Him!
