Words of Hope from the Well

"Heaviness in the heart of man maketh it stoop: but a good word maketh it glad."

Deuteronomy 31:8  “And the Lord, He is the one who goes before you.  He will be with you, He will not leave you nor forsake you; do not fear nor be dismayed.”

Moses is telling Joshua this as he is about to go on a journey with the children of Israel to lead them to the promise land.  You see Joshua would have many battles along the way.  But Moses was letting him know “you are not alone.”  This goes for us today.  This cancer journey isn’t easy and for some the cancer journey is longer than others but know this “You are not alone.”  Through each chemo treatment or radiation or surgery the Lord goes with you.  There are battles along the way of this cancer journey but “You are not alone.” And that is very important to hang on to when the battle gets hard.  Hold on to the one who goes with you and his name is Jesus!

Next month Oasis of Hope Christian Cancer Support Group Meeting will be on the third March 17, 2020 at 7:00 p.m. at Bethany Assembly of God.  We welcome you to join us for words of encouragement and prayer if you or your loved one is facing the cancer journey.

January 2020 Meeting From Oasis of Hope CCCSG

Hebrews 13:5 NKJV "I will never leave you nor forsake you."
Philippians 4:4 NASB "Rejoice in the Lord always, again I will say, rejoice!"

On Tuesday Jan. 21st we had our Oasis of Hope Christian Cancer Support Group.  I spoke on: "What if Jesus were in the boat with you?"  I spoke on Jesus and His disciples trapped in a thunderstorm on the Sea of Galilee and the disciples were afraid but Jesus was in the boat with them.  Just as the disciples had the storm raging around them, we too have the storm raging around us when we get the news we have cancer.  Waves of fear rock our boat and depths of despair can threaten us.  Although the storm may be fierce, we don't have to be afraid because Jesus is in the boat with us.  His power can calm the storm we are in or calm the storm in us.  Circumstances change with the wind, but Jesus never changes.  As we focus on Him, we can rejoice and sing praises to His name knowing His blessings come even in the storms.  He is faithful every step of the way, and He uses our difficulties to teach us to trust Him.

Ephesians 5:20 NLT "Give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ."
Psalms 105:1-4 ESV "Oh give thanks top the Lord; call upon his name; make known his deeds among the peoples! Sing to him, sing praises to him; tell of all his wondrous works!  Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice!  Seek the lord and his strength; seek his presence continually!

On Tuesday Nov. 19th we had our Oasis of Hope Christian Cancer Support Group and I spoke on Thankfulness no matter our circumstance.  Max Lucado wrote: "Gratitude get us through the hard stuff.  To reflect on your blessings is to rehearse God's accomplishments.  To rehearse God's accomplishments is to discover his heart.  To discover his heart is to discover not just good gifts but the Good Giver.  Gratitude always leaves us looking at God and away from dread.  It does to anxiety what the morning sun does to valley mist.  It burns it up."  In Psalms 105:1 it says "Oh give thanks to the Lord..." if we lived that out everyday, it would impact everything.  In spite of our health and health struggles.  Every whisper of thanks honors God as being trustworthy and faithful, regardless of the circumstances or challenges we face.  God is faithful.  When we find it hard to give thanks, His mercy meets us over and over.

October 2019 Meeting from Oasis of Hope CCSG

Matthew 6:34 “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things.  Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”

Proverbs 3:5 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding.”

Psalm 119:105 “Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.”

Last night we had our Oasis of Hope Christian Cancer Support Group and I spoke on Healed Enough for Today.  Not to worry about tomorrow and the what ifs but that we woke up today and we are healed enough for today and what the Lord has for us this day.  Believing that since God made this day, He knows about the day, He controls the day, and he is faithful throughout the day.  Since we have no control over yesterday, or tomorrow, trust Him today. When we are trying to see tomorrow or beyond, His light lights up the path (one step at a time) before us and we cannot see into tomorrow so focus on today.  Reflect on things God has provided.  So look for his blessings.  It could be those who give you rides, call you, care givers. By trusting God, focusing on today, and looking for blessings, we can rejoice and be glad even in the midst of our cancer journey.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12  "Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour.  For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.  Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone?  And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a three-fold cord is not quickly broken."

Last night we had our Oasis of Hope Christian Cancer Support Group and I spoke on Ecclesiastes 4:9-12. A cord of three strands is not easily broken. God is the divine strand that gives us strength in the cancer journey and He gives us compassionate family, friends, church and yes even this group to come along side and take your hand and walk with you intertwined with God. Remember no matter how overwhelming this journey seems remember it is one step at a time. You may not be able to run a marathon but you can cover the same distance by taking one step today and a few more tomorrow. If one step now is all you can handle that is okay. You don't have to be in this journey alone. God designed us to be in relationship with Him and with others. Solomon in his wisdom, teaches us together we lift each other up. Never lose faith. Don't focus on how big you think your journey is focus instead on how big you know God to be!

1 Thessalonians 5:18 " In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you."

2 Corinthians 12:9 "And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness."

This cancer journey is yours and what matters is your walk through it.  We didn't choose this battle, but we can look for God's hand in this battle and trust that He will use it for His glory!  The Lord wants an intimate walk with us which often comes through trials and brokenness.  If we let him God will intimately walk with us during our deepest trials.  In our intimate walk we will find inner strength if we strive to focus on His will for our lives instead of merely seeing the long rocky path stretched before our eyes.

Eventually, all of us will find ourselves in situations that are irrevocable and unchangeable- circumstances that cannot be undone- only counteracted.  We are forced to figure out how to take a worst case scenario and turn it into the best case scenario we can.  Sometimes the only thing we can do in our suffering is to allow God to turn the bitterness in our lives into something sweet. "When life gives you lemons - make lemonade."  Don't just focus on what is wrong in our life; focus on what God will do in your life.  God I might have cancer and I might be sick today - Thank you for giving me great friends and family.  Thank you for giving me another sunrise.

2 Cor. 10:4-5 "For the weapons of our warfare are not of flesh, but mighty before God to the casting down of strongholds, casting down imaginations, and every high thing that is exalted against the knowledge of God, and bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ."

Philippians 4:8 "Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honorable, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things."

When cancer strikes, the battle for survival must be engaged at the mental, emotional and spiritual levels as much as at the physical level.  Thoughts of death, dying, resignation, despair, depression and hopelessness are as lethal as cancer itself.  The Lord knows that Satan will come against us with different thoughts and the Lord gives us supernatural weapons to win the battle for our minds and thoughts, including His power, His Word and His authority, when we've given our lives to Him.  Preparing for life's trials and tribulations means filling our heart, soul, and Mind with God's Word.  When your mind start to fret about the future remind yourself what God has provided for you today and take pleasure and gratitude for those things.  Remind yourself that you have no control over the future, and can do nothing about the past, so strive to live your life in light of "this day" that God has provided.  God's path requires us to take one day at a time, one treatment at a time, one stage at a time, one moment at a time.

Lamentations 3: 22-23: "Through the Lord's mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not.  They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness."

Jeremiah had been writing about how difficult and depressing his circumstances were in captivity.  But then suddenly, in the middle of all this, his thoughts take a positive turn toward the character of God.  Mercies is used 250 times in the  Old Testament.  An all-inclusive term for God's love, goodness, forgiveness, compassion, and faithfulness.  When Jeremiah meditated on this, he remembered That God had many mercies available every single day.  When he struggled with discouragement he focused on yet another characteristic - Faithfulness.  When we become discouraged we should do what Jeremiah did, stop and remember God's faithfulness.  When the storms of cancer overwhelm us, we need to get alone and reflect on this amazing truth: God is faithful!  He is faithful and full of mercy.  Remember where He has already brought you from and He continues to walk with us.  In the midst of your battle remember to put your faith in God!

May 2017 Meeting From Oasis of Hope CCSG

"The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. "The Lord is my portion," says my soul, "therefore I will hope in him."  Lamentations 3:22-24
"Be still, and know that I am God...God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.  Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way...The Lord of hosts is with us."(Excerpts from Psalm46)  Philippians 4:13 "I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me."

In a storm (like cancer) you have to go with what you know not what you feel.  Feelings can be deceiving.  We want so much to walk by sight and not by faith!  But we need to walk by faith and remember He will carry us through the hard times when they come. We may know all this and believe all of this in our heads, but some days this truth does not rest so easily in our hearts. Sometimes, our hearts may resists fully embracing this truth and the peace that is would bring.  Some moments, we can become overwhelmed with anxiety about our cancer journey that we don't even know how to pray.  Then I would say be reminded of the scriptures above.  Scripture can be a great way to get through the times of anxiety.  We need to let faith arise in our souls to remind ourselves that there is a healer, that His love is deeper than the sea, that His mercy is unfailing and His arms are a fortress for the weak.  We can walk through this cancer journey because we can do all things through Christ which strengthens us!

Matthew 6:34 - "Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.  Each day has enough trouble of it's own."

We as cancer patients have a tendency to look back before we had cancer and long for those days.  The way things use to be before we were diagnosed with cancer or we allow our thoughts to dwell on the fears of what tomorrow might bring.  We can ruin the memories of today by allowing our thoughts to dwell on the past or the fears of what tomorrow might bring.  The true treasures of our lives are found in our daily relationships and opportunities.  We don't know what the future will bring, but we have today and that is reason enough to celebrate!  We must look for the blessing of the day.  From care givers to friends who stop by to cards in the mail.  These are treasures and blessings.  Life is to be lived one day at a time.  Jesus will provide what we need for that day.  Prayer - Jesus help me not to dwell on the past or entertain thought of the future, but to "stay right here" and to embrace today.
